Guerlain

The Family of Fragrance Masters

The Guerlain perfume house is as old as the hills. It is one of the oldest perfume houses and was founded in 1828 by Pierre-François Pascal Guerlain. The house had its beginnings in a small perfume store on rue de Rivoli, Paris. Guerlain immediately gained popularity with the 'who's who' of high class society. He made custom perfumes and built a loyal customer base.

Pierre Francois Pascal GuerlainIt did not take long before he began to rub shoulders with royalty. In 1853 he created Eau de Cologne Imperiale for Empress Eugenie. This creation won him the envied position as His Majesty's Official Perfumer in France. Soon after, he was comissioned by the likes of Queen Victoria and the Spanish queen, Isabella.

Pierre-Francois died in 1864. His sons took over the business with Aime becoming the house perfumerer and Gabriel the handled the 'business side' of the house. Aime created one of Guerlain's most loved perfumes, Jicky in 1889. He also created Fleur de Italie in 1884, Rococo in 1887 and Eau de Cologne du Coq in 1894. He is also credited with creating the 'Guerlinade', the houses famous base that consists of notes of vanilla and amber.

He launched Apres L'Ondee in 1906, L'Heure Bleue in 1912 and Mitsouko in 1919. He also created Shalimar in 1925, the creation of which is said to have been accidental. It is said that Jacques simply pour a bottle of vanilla into a bottle of Jicky, out of curiosity and to see what would come of it. Thus was born the perfume that is considered to be Guerlain's most famous. To date Jean-Paul, Jacques Gerlain's grandson is said to have helped Jacques produce Ode in 1956. His first solo creation came in 1959, with the launch of Vetvier. Jean Paul inherited the position of master perfumerer and retired 2002 at the age of 65 and the family company was purchased by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy.

In this perfume, magnolia made its debut in the House of Guerlain. At the launch, the house dubbed L'Instant de Guerlain as their “world wide fragrance.” A recent addition to this line is L'Instant de Guerlain Fleur de Mandarin and L'Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme Critaux D'Argumes which debuted in 2007.

The fragrance house that started as a small family perfume shop, grew into one of the world's most prestigious perfume manufacturers. Both the perfumes and the bottles they are contained in are timeless, they are nothing less than a carefully constructed piece of art. Gueralin continues to pay attention to the intricate details that come with perfumery, and this is what sets them apart.
