A Life Long Love Affair With Luxury

Salvatore Ferragamo was born in 1898 in the province of Avellino, into a family of 14 children. His family resided in Bonito, a small, enchanting town between valleys, and at the top of a hill. He began his phenomenal career an a shoemaker apprentice at the ripe age of 11.

Ferragamo FIn his autobiography, Salvatore relates how one evening he arrived home to find his mother distressed. When asked what the problem was, she told Salvatore how his sister was to attend her First Communion service at the local church. Each little girl was to be adorned in a pretty white dress and matching shoes. Being so poor, they could not afford the shoes for his sister. That night, Salvatore, at the age of 9, stayed awake, crafting shoes for his sister using white cardboard and tools borrowed from the local cobbler.

Ferragamo Incanto CharmsMore than 10 years later, he left for America and joined his brother, working in “Queens Quality” shoe factory, but the ambitious Salvatore only lasted there for 15 days. He was unhappy with the quality of shoes being produced and was convinced that quality shoes should only ever be sewn by hand. So in1919 he had opened his first shop, making made-to-measure shoes for women. It was located on 1033 State Street, Santa Babara. Surprisingly, at the same time, he also studied human anatomy at the University of California, perhaps inspired by the feet he dressed everyday. This would later prove useful, despite most of his concentrating his career on the fashion industry. In 1921 Salvatore and his brother Emilio were involved in an accident, in which Emilio was fatally wounded. Salvatore only suffered a broken leg and later filed a patent for a traction system for bones in the leg and foot.
