Pierre Cardin has won worldwide acclaim as a visionary of multiple talents. He is recognized as a high class designer whose elegant fragrances are sold in over 3000 stores. Cardin's entrance into the perfume industry 35 years ago was the beginning of a fragrance enterprise that continues to thrive and evolve to this very day.
Cardin was born in Venice, Italy, on 6th July 1922, to French parents who were living there at the time. Soon after his birth his parents returned to France with him. He developed an interest in costume design and architecture at an early age. His career in fashion began at 14, when he worked as a clothier’s apprentice, where he learned the basics of fashion design and construction. At the age of 17 he began working for a tailor in Vichy, for whom he made suits for women.
He spent three years refining his craft with fashion power house Christian Dior from 1947 to 1950. In 1950 he opened his own salon and in 1953 set up the Maison de Couture in the rue Richepanse. His innovated designs took the world by storm, and by the 1960’s he was one of the most celebrated designers in fashion. He achieved distinction for designs that seemed to disregard the female form in the traditional sense, yet somehow retained a sense of femininity.
It was not until 1972 that Cardin tried his hand at marketing a fragrance under his name. It was defined as a refreshing, subtle, oriental cologne. It is a blend of fresh and spicy, a masculine fragrance recommended for romantic wear. In 1981 that Choc de Cardin perfume was released in France. It is distinctive for its rich, varied blend of aromas; spices with moss, citrus and floral fragrances. It is recommended for evening wear.
Many fragrances were to follow; Rose Cardin in 1990, Enigme in 1993, Insatiable in 1995, Revelation in 2004, Emotion for Women in 2005, Emotion for Men in 2006, Revelation Energy, Pierre Cardin Pour Homme and Pierre Cardin Pour Femme in 2007.
Unlike many brands who choose to maintain exclusivity, Cardin embraced the masses. He was one of the first high-end designers to enter markets which are generally ignored, for example, China, Russia, Africa and Australia. It is no wonder that Cardin perfumes have become world renowned.
