Bourjois

Pioneers and Creators of Classics

Alexandre Napoleon Bourjois began his company as a make up manufacturer in France, 1863. He was a pioneer and developed the world's first powder blush, Pastel Joues. It was primarily used in theater and proved to be a hit with models and actresses. Bourjois success soared, and this revolutionary make up spread around the world, taking women's dressing tables by storm.

Bourjois Soir de ParisBourjois today is just as famous for its cosmetics, as it is for its fragrances. Soir de Paris, literally translating to 'Evening in Paris,' is the first perfume released by Bourjois in 1929. The perfume has since then enjoyed both French and international acclaim. It has been dubbed 'The Most Famous Perfume in the World.' The classic scent includes a blend of ylang ylang, turkish rose, peach, vanilla, violet, cedar, musk and bergamont. Its packaging is still well recognized today, a cobalt blue tasseled flacon or bottle, it is even now sought after by vintage collectors. Other fragrances released in Bourjois early days include Kobako, Clin d'Oeil and Evasion.

Bourjois Soir de Paris A very important year for Bourjois was 1879. The perfumery inaugurates a brand new store on the Saint Martin boulevard, and on this occasion launches Poudre de riz de java and their own etiquette model: Fabrique Speciale de Produits pour la Beaute de Dames. The quality of their products brought Bourjois House the supremacy. Their fabrication method was unique: a mixture between the make-up powder and water was made, the mixture being sliced. The round slices were dried up and then patterned to give them the final aspect.

In 1989 Bourjois decided to re-enter the perfumery industry. Without wanting to get on the celebrity bandwagon, they decided to take a different approach to product endorsement. The perfume house approached Princess Stephanie of Monaco to be the face of their new fragrance, Stephanie. Jacques Polge and Francois Deachy (creator of Chanel) were called upon to design this fragrance. The Princess was also an integral part of the design process and would not lend her name to the perfume without her stamp of approval.

Bourjois Soir de Paris  The successful result was a fusion of citrus, coriander, ylang ylang, jasmin, vanilla and tonka bean notes. The same attention to detail was paid to the packaging of the fragrance. The bottle was designed to resonate with the Princess' love for draped evening wear. Distribution was limited, and only included 1000 perfumeries, 350 stores.

A general manager for Bourjois said “what I hadn't noticed before about the beauty business is how much fun it provides customers. It is truly a playground.” Bourjois thus continues to add variety to this “playground,” for its customers. In 1991 the popular Soir de Paris was relaunched and included more floral notes.

Today the company remains a leader in the cosmetics and perfume industries. Soir de Paris made a lasting mark and continues to be one of the best selling women's perfumes. The Bourjois perfume house continues to provide ground breaking products, as it did in its beginnings.
