Alfred Sung is a world renowned designer who is known for his elegant bridal dresses and sensational perfume range. The Hong Kong-born Canadian businessman is quiet, shy and lives a very private life. As a young man, he was an aspiring artist, but moved to Paris to study couture then later to New York, attending the Parson's School of Design for a year. His working career began in Seventh Avenue in New York's Garment District. In 1927 Sung made the move to Toronto, Canada, where he started out as a junior designer on Spadina Avenue for Lidzon Ltd.
Finally moved to open his own business, Sung opened a small, trendy boutique. It was located in Yorkville and he named it Moon, an ode to himself, born Alfred Sung Moon, literally meaning “door in the cloud”. For three years, he took charge of all facets of his business, from designing to cutting, sewing and marketing. Strong lines, top-of-the-range fabrics, and detail were his trademark.
Sung joined Saul and Joseph Mimran to form the Monaco Group in 1979, which gave both financial backing and business management leadership. This partnership was the catalyst in launching more boutiques, a luggage, sunglass and fragrance range under his own name.
Sung believes that it is a natural part of a designer's duty to design a scent. In Women's Wear Daily magazine he says, “Fragrance is an invisible accessory, so after you do the visible accessories -jewelry, watches, glasses - fragrance is part of that progression.”
1986 Sung released his first fragrance Sung, for women, a refreshing floral fragrance that sensually blends essences of iris, vanilla, sandalwood, lemon ylang-ylang and vetiver. Despite being on the market this fragrance is still one of the best sellers and has been hallmarked a 'classic.' This spurred Sung to release another gem, Sung Homme, three years later followed by Encore at the end of 1990. In 1995 Sung added Forever to his collection then Pure in 1997. Sung celebrated the turn of the century with the debut of Shi in 2000 and it was the winner of the HBA International Package award. Heiwas released in 2002, Sha and Paradise in 2003 (both for men and women versions). His recent releases include Jewel in 2005, Bijou and Joya in 2006.
Alfred Sung has had his fair share of trials and tribulations. The Monaco Group filed for bankruptcy. Sung persevered and built a new firm, Alfred Sung Collections Ltd., with the Mimran brothers and Michael Waitzer. The new enterprise was also soon to be plagued by bankruptcy which was filed in 1997.
Despite this however, Alfred Sung continues to mesmerize the world with new designs, additions to his perfume and accessory ranges. His perseverance and fastidious nature have earned him much respect in both the fashion and cosmetics industries. Unsuprisingly, he has been dubbed Canada's King of Fashion by national news magazine, Maclean's.
